Flatwoven rugs have been woven in homes for a long time and are available throughout Iran. Some of these are kilims, flat-woven wool rugs with the typical "kilim slit". Others are sumaks, flat-woven rugs with an embroidered look on the front and loose ends on the back. Originally, kilims and sumaks were multifunctional, used in front of doorways, to cover camels or horses, or as tent roofs, dining tables, or to sleep on. These rugs have been well maintained or refurbished.
