  • Vintage Cream & Sugar Set, Franciscan Desert Rose, Hand Painted, Vintage Tableware, Serveware, Mid Century, American Made Pottery, Marked USA, Traditional Tableware, (Discontinued)
  • Made in USA
  • Vintage: 1964
  • Details:  This is an amazing set of American Pottery!  It features the classic pink floral pattern called Desert Rose, introduced in 1941. The creamer has roses on both sides.  The sugar bowl has a lid and two handles, a rose as lid finial completes the look.  These pieces are the original Gladding McBean, (Interpace), in California in the 1960's.  Hand washing in recommended since they are old, not dishwasher safe, we believe these were still being hand painted. This ceramic is not bright white, it's more of a beige / off-white color. The floral pattern is great for Spring and Summer get togethers, but it's a classic anytime set.  We also carry several Complete Place Settings, Serving Pieces, plus the Salt & Pepper Set in this pattern, while supplies last.
  • Material:  Earthenware
  • Dimensions:  Sugar: 4.25 inches Tall including the lid finial. Top opening is 2.25 inches in Diameter. Approx. 5.5 inches Wide (handle to handle).  Creamer: 4.25 inches Tall, 2.0 inches Diameter (top opening). Approx. 4.5 inches Wide (from spout to handle).
  • Condition:  Vintage - Used. Excellent Vintage Condition.  Absolutely Pristine.  No chips or crazing.  As with all these older USA made pottery pieces there could be signs of wear/use/age, including slight wear very minor surface scratches, etc.  Please review all pictures and make sure you love this item before purchasing, we can't accept returns.  Please remember these are VINTAGE and ANTIQUE items, they are NOT new, every effort has been made to show any scratches, wear  and imperfections.

Franciscan Ceramics is a brand of pottery from Gladding McBean & Co., (1875- today).  Gladding McBean has a very extensive history, we will concentrate on the Franciscan line and provide you a brief insight into this very popular ceramic.  In 1932 Gladding McBean made a line of experimental dinnerware in solid colors.  In 1934, they first used the brand name: “Franciscan Pottery”.  The company name was changed to Franciscan Ware in 1936.  They were the first company to sell a dinnerware “Starter Set,” all packaged together in one box.  This pattern, “Desert Rose” was introduced in 1941, it was the second hand-painted embossed dinnerware developed by the company, ("Apple", being the first one introduced in 1940).  These two patterns remained the company's best sellers and they are known as "the most popular patterns ever made in America."  Later Interpace owned the line from 1962-1979 and Wedgwood from 1979-1984. Originally made in California, Wedgwood moved the Franciscan pottery production to England, circa 1983. Patterns Desert Rose, Apple, and Fresh Fruit were moved to the Johnson Brothers division of Wedgwood in England and all other dinnerware lines were discontinued.  In 1984, Wedgwood closed the Franciscan Ceramics division. In 1986, Waterford Glass Group plc purchased Wedgwood, which included the Franciscan brand, only the Desert Rose and Apple patterns survived, they were being made in China since 2004.  However, in 2011 Apple was discontinued and in 2013 Desert Rose was discontinued.  In 2015 all Johnson Brothers and Franciscan products were discontinued.  The Lincoln, California plant of Gladding McBean continues to produce architectural terra cotta, roofing tiles, and sewer tiles.
