Noise Level & Talking Ability

Like other lovebird species, Madagascar lovebirds aren't particularly loud birds, but are certainly capable of making themselves heard. They tend to just make occasional high-pitched cheeps, but can certainly make other sounds as well. These birds are quiet enough they are suitable for apartment living. Madagascar lovebirds certainly may mimic some sounds and noises, but aren't known for being the greatest talkers.

Physical Features

Madagascar lovebirds are also called grey-headed lovebirds. This is mostly in reference to the males of the species, which have a wonderful grey head which can vary from whitish to light mauve, depending on the individual. Both males and females are predominately green. The back and wings are quite dark in comparison with the light-green belly. The flight feathers are an olive tone. Hens lack the contrast of the grey head in males, but many do have a bit of a muddy grey tone themselves. The feet are grey in both males and females, the beak is a very light sandy colour, which may be slightly greyer in males. The tail is tri-coloured, being light green - sometimes yellowish - furthest from the tip with a heavy black band followed by a tip that is the same colour as the back. The wings are slightly large in proportion to the body, making these guys skillful flyers even when lightly clipped. When perched and resting these birds have a very straight figure. The beak blends almost flush into the face, and the wings lay very flat against the body.

Pet Profile

Madagascar lovebirds are similar to parrotlets as pets. They are small birds but seem unaware of this fact, and act more like large parrot. As a result, they are an extremely fun and rewarding species to work with but may pose a challenge to owners who are inexperienced or generally more passive. They are trainable and affectionate tiny parrots. They can be a good pet around younger people, but it is recommended that the owner has prior experience with parrots.

Diet

Madagascar lovebirds take readily to a pelleted diet supplemented with fresh vegetables, and some seeds. Also similar to parrotlets, these small birds have a high metabolism and do require a small amount of seeds each day to remain healthy long-term. They particularly like grass-type seeds, millets, and other small seeds. Fresh water should always be accessible.

Housing

Madagascar lovebirds are small, but active birds. They do require a spacious cage with plenty of enriching toys. Like other lovebirds, these guys love to shred and tear, so select toys that will help to satisfy these needs. Keep in mind that lovebirds are nest builders, and there is a chance your pet may become territorial if you allow them to create a nest in the cage. As with all birds, horizontal space is more valuable than vertical space. A variety of perches should be provided, ensuring the birds feet are exposed to a number of textures and diameters.
