It is lightweight and porous which makes it an ideal addition to potting mixes and soils. In plants, pumice is used to improve soil structure and drainage. When added to soil, pumice helps to create air spaces that allow roots to breathe and water to drain more easily. This is particularly useful in soils that are heavy or compacted, as pumice can help to prevent waterlogging and improve aeration. Pumice is also used as a top dressing for plants, especially in bonsai and cactus gardening. The small particles of pumice help to prevent soil erosion, retain moisture, and provide a stable surface for the plants to grow on. Overall, pumice is a useful material for all plants including cacti, succulents, and bonsai because of its ability to improve soil structure, drainage, and aeration, and its usefulness as a top dressing for plants.
