Description: This is one of the smallest known cichlids that are endemic to Lake Tanganyika, and belongs to the group of shell-dwelling cichlids. As is the case for all African Rift Lake cichlids, this fish requires a higher pH and cannot be mixed with most other freshwater fish. This fish would do well in an aquarium with a sandy substrate and plenty of shells for it to inhabit. They are very territorial and will defend their shell and the surrounding area fiercely. Suitable tank mates would include other small rock dwellers and small open water species such as cyprinids. All African cichlids require extra filtration and water flow as well as excellent maintenance (regular cleaning). Good water quality and appropriate housemates are most important to keep this species healthy.
