The M1 Abrams, successor to the M60 series, was introduced in 1980 by General Dynamics, then a Chrysler Motors division. Its advanced Chobham armor ensures superior US main battle tank protection. A gas turbine engine, smaller and easier to maintain than a diesel, powers the Abrams, though fuel consumption offsets space savings, possibly influencing the rejection of the German Leopard 2. Equipped with thermal sights, laser rangefinders, and a sophisticated gun stabilizer, the Abrams delivers exceptional mobile firepower, day or night. In the 1991 Gulf War, it demonstrated unmatched prowess, destroying Iraqi T-72s without loss to enemy fire.
