RARE! The Haskalah Movement in Russia by Jacob S. Raisin | 1914 FIRST EDITION | Antique Jewish History Book | Bixley Shop

This is a FIRST EDITION copy of The Haskalah Movement in Russia, written by Jacob S. Raisin in 1914.

According to the Gutenberg Project... The book explores the Haskalah movement, or Jewish Enlightenment, that emerged in Russia during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, detailing its impact on the Jewish community's cultural, educational, and social spheres. Raisin aims to trace the evolution of this movement, highlighting various influential figures and their diverse ideals and aspirations. The opening of the work delves into the historical context preceding the Haskalah movement, exploring the conditions and experiences of the Russo-Polish Jews prior to 1648. Raisin discusses the cultural life and social structure of these communities, emphasizing their pursuit of education amidst oppression and adversity. The text serves as a lead-in to understanding how these previous circumstances fostered a yearning for enlightenment and cultural revival, setting the stage for the subsequent development of the Haskalah in response to both external pressures and internal needs for reform and advancement within the Jewish community.
