The Elm-Tree on the Mall: A Chronicle of Our Own Times, (Paperback)

"The Elm-Tree on the Mall" is a masterfully crafted social satire that serves as a profound entry in Anatole France's celebrated "Contemporary History" series. Set in a provincial French town during the late nineteenth century, the novel centers on the intellectual reflections and social encounters of Monsieur Bergeret, a modest yet observant professor of literature. Through a series of witty dialogues and sharp character sketches, France explores the intricate power struggles between the church and the state, as well as the trivialities of local gossip and political ambition.

The narrative unfolds around the titular elm-tree, where the town's elite and its thinkers gather to debate the shifting tides of French society. France's prose is characterized by its elegant irony and skeptical humanism, offering a vivid portrait of a nation grappling with modernization and ideological conflict. As Bergeret navigates the complexities of academia and the machinations of the clergy, the work provides a timeless critique of human folly and institutional rigidness. This chronicle remains a cornerstone of early twentieth-century literature, showcasing the intellectual depth and stylistic brilliance that earned Anatole France the Nobel Prize in Literature. It is an essential read for those interested in the nuances of French culture and the enduring power of political satire.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
