The last great novel of the Gothic age, The Monk (1796) tells the story of Ambrosio, a devout and pious priest and of his subsequent descent into the most depraved of sins and debauchery. The Gothic genre fell out of favour shortly after publication of The Monk and the book was ridiculed for its outlandish and salacious plot by the the time Jane Austen wrote her Northanger Abbey (1817). However, the novel found new audience with modern readers, due in no small part to Lewis's unique treatment of the supernatural, which for him was never a mere plot device, but a dangerous and complex disruption to the ordinary.
