The Mysteries of Magic: A Modern Rendering of the 19th Century Edition

The Mysteries of Magic stands as one of A. E. Waite’s most important contributions to the English-language understanding of Western esotericism.First published in 1897, this volume presents a structured digest of the writings of Éliphas Lévi, the French occult philosopher whose synthesis of Kabbalah, ceremonial symbolism, and Christian mysticism shaped the modern occult revival. Rather than offering sensationalism, Waite provides analysis, clarification, and theological framing—distinguishing symbolic philosophy from superstition.Within these pages, readers will encounter:• The philosophical foundations of Hermetic doctrine• Lévi’s interpretation of the Kabbalah and sacred symbolism• The doctrine of correspondences: “As above, so below”• The ethical and metaphysical dimensions of ceremonial magic• A biographical and critical study of Lévi’s life and thoughtWaite’s work served as a gateway through which Lévi’s ideas entered English-speaking intellectual circles. Its influence can be traced through early twentieth-century esoteric movements and symbolic traditions that followed. This facsimile edition reproduces the 1897 Second Edition (Revised and Enlarged) without alteration of the original text. Pagination, spelling, and structure have been preserved for historical continuity. For readers interested in the philosophical architecture of Western esotericism—not as spectacle, but as intellectual tradition—The Mysteries of Magic remains foundational.
