In 1917, the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) was established, with over a million soldiers deployed in France by 1918. This force, led by General John Joseph Pershing, comprised infantry divisions and marines. They fought alongside Allied troops from France, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Pershing aimed for the AEF to operate independently, which became feasible as American soldiers' training and combat experience improved.
